Paul Kayl
Ponca Neb. – Paul Joseph Kayl, 69, of Ponca died Friday, Dec. 7, 2001, at his residence of pancreatic cancer. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Ponca, with the Revs. David Liewer and Jim Kramper officiating. Burial will be in Calvary at South Creek Cemetery in rural Ponca. Visitation will begin at 4 p.m. today, with family present at 5:30 p.m., a Knights of Columbus rosary at 6 p.m., with a Scriptural wake service at 7 p.m., all at the church. Mohr Funeral Home in Ponca is in charge of arrangements. Mr. Kayl was born Sept. 19, 1932, in rural Ponca, the son of Ray and Dorothy (Bennett) Kayl. He graduated from Heelan High School and Western Iowa Tech. in Sioux City. He married Zona Grillett of Sioux City on July 6, 1963, in Salix, Iowa. He resided in Winnebago, Neb., for 11 years, where he did maintenance work for St. Augustine’s Catholic Church. He was one of the first members to help start the volunteer EMS service in Winnebago. He was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Ponca, and a member of the Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed woodworking, gardening and photography. Survivors include his wife; four sons, Bill Kayl of Allen, Neb., Ray and his wife, Pam Kayl of McCook Lake, Tom and his wife, Angela Kayl of Sioux City, and Joseph Kayl of Ponca; two daughters, Veronica Free of Winnebago, and Patricia and husband Rodney Detches of Sioux City; two stepsons, Owen Rose of Ponca, and Terry and his wife, Rita Rose of Sioux City; a stepdaughter Emma and Rene Rose-Caron of Cleveland, Ohio; 10 grandchildren; two brothers and their wives, Gary and Jeri Kayl of Ponca, and Patrick and Julie Kayl of Grand Island, Neb.; and two sisters and their husbands, Donna and Larry Lund, and Carol and Jack Rahn, all of Ponca. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Armand; and a sister, Mary Ann.
