John "Jack" DeBates died January 6th, 1975 at his home in the Blue Mound Tower assisted living in Luverne, MN after a sudden illness.John "Jack" DeBates was born February 6th, 1904, in Anawan, IL. He attended school in Richmond, IL. In his early teens, the family moved to Jasper, MN and later to a farm near Hardwick, MN.September 9th, 1931, he married Augusta “Gustie” Sophia Mains in Pipestone, MN. They farmed near Hardwick for 19 years. In 1950 John purchased a general store in Hardwick which he owned and managed for another 19 years.After retiring from the store, he and Gustie lived on in Hardwick for another 4 years before moving to the Blue Mound Tower in Luverne.At the time of his death, John “Jack” DeBates was survived by his wife, Augustus of Luverne; one son, DuWayne, of Kanaranzi; one daughter, Patricia, Mrs. Lowell Ahrendt, of Luverne; 10 grandchildren; four sisters, Emily, Mrs. Willard Berthleson, of Florence; Marie, Mrs. Lee Haroldson, of Ruthon; Genevieve, Mrs. Howard Carlson, of Jasper; four brothers, Edward, of Hardwick; Charles, of Pipestone; Richard, of Jasper; and Francis, of Hardwick.He was preceded in death by his parents, two grandchildren, and three sisters.John was a member of St. Catherine's Catholic Church in Luverne, the Luverne Senior Citizens, and the Rock County Sportman's club.
