George J. HegartyGeorge J. Hegarty, 81, of Sioux City died Friday, June 6, 1997, at the Indian Hills Care Center following a brief illness.Funeral Mass services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Michael's Catholic Church, with the Rev. Lawrence McCarty officiating.  Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the American Legion Monahan Post 64.  Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. today, with the family present from 6 to 9 p.m., a rosary at 7 p.m. and a Scripture service at 7:30p.m., at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.Mr. Hegarty was born March 7, 1916, in Danbury Iowa, the son of Daniel and Mary (Kane) Hegarty.  He was raised in the Danbury area.He married Lorene M. Ortner on November 10, 1938 in Danbury.  She died on November 26, 1976, in Sioux City.  He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He farmed in Danbury area and owned and operated a trucking company.  He came to Sioux City in 1948, where he was employed with Armour and Company until 1963.  He then worked for the Sioux City Stockyards until 1966.  He was employed as a foreman for the paint crew with the Iowa Department of Transportation until his retirement in 1977.  Following his retirement, he worked part time for Wells Fargo.He was a member of St. Michaels Catholic Church, the American Legion, and the Fraternal Order of the Eagles in Sioux City.Survivors include six sons and their wives, Ronald and Carol, Robert and Dixie, Terry and Paula, all of Sioux City, Daniel and Chris of Storm Lake, Iowa, Randall and Pat of Ranch Santa Margarita, California and Thomas and Carol Sue of Littleton, Colorado.; Three daughters and their husbands, Judy and Marion Hobbs, Pat and Jim Abdo, all of Sioux City, and Gary and Jeri Kayl of Ponca, Nebraska; 30 grandchildren, five step grandchildren; 26 great grandchildren; and five step great grandchildren.He was preceded in death by three brothers, Ray, Paul and Jim; two sisters Catherine Hegarty and Ruth Fitzpatrick; and a grandson Darrel Kayl.
